How Do I Get Rid of Ants?

While not necessarily the worst pest you could have overrunning your home, ants still present a problem as they can damage property, contaminate food, and form large colonies that are difficult to eliminate. Some species of ants may even deliver bites or stings. If you have an infestation of ants, you understandably want to get rid of them, whether you do so yourself or with the help of a professional pest control service.

You have many options to deal with an ant infestation, two of which are spraying and baiting. The severity of your ant problem will determine which option is right for you, and Natrix Pest Control is happy to help you make this decision so you get rid of ants in your space.

What is Ant Baiting?

Ant baiting is a common method for eliminating ants and their colonies. Bait typically consists of a slow acting insecticide and a food source such as sugar that will attract the ants. Upon setting the bait out in strategic spots where it won’t be disturbed, ants should soon make their way to it.

The ants will feed on the bait and take it back to the colony, unwittingly spreading the poison to other members, including the queen. This is crucial as the queen is responsible for laying eggs that are the colony’s future. Depending on the type of species and the size of the colony, there could be more than one queen, which more bait may be necessary to thoroughly eliminate the infestation.

For smaller colonies, the bait should work in about 1-3 days while a larger colony could take 1-2 weeks. Assessing the size of the colony and the type of ants you have are important to so you can use the correct bait and an appropriate amount.

What is Ant Spraying?

Spraying ants involves the use of an insect repellant or insecticide to control the ant inside and outside your home. One option is a non-repellant spray that won’t kill ants on contact, allowing them to track through the spray area and carry the insecticide to the colony, where it will have a more devastating impact.

A second option is to use a spray that kills on contact. If you only have a few ants, this is an acceptable option, but because only a small percentage of ants roam outside of the colony, an ant killer is generally useless to eliminate the entire colony if you have an infestation.

Sprays are a perfect supplement to baits, allowing you to eliminate the ants you see and the ants you don’t see for a more thorough elimination.

Should I Bait or Use Spray?

It really depends on the type of ant you’re dealing with and the size of the infestation, but using bait is the most dependable way to eliminate ants and their colony. Spraying alone may only scatter the ants and make it more difficult to eliminate the infestation. However, you can use sprays and bait to good effect together, preferrably by baiting indoors and spraying outdoors for results you should be able to notice in a few days.

Are There Natural Ant Repellants?

You can choose between baits and sprays to eliminate ants and their colonies, but if you prefer to merely repel ants without killing them, there are natural repellants you can use, some of which may even be in your own kitchen.

  • Vinegar
  • Citrus
  • Black pepper
  • Peppermint oil
  • Cayenne
  • Thyme
  • Lavender

If not found in your kitchen, these items are available in local retail stores. You can take each individual ingredient and mix it in a spray bottle with water to apply to areas where you notice ants, including entryways, baseboards, and windowsills. In some cases, such as with black pepper, you can lay down a dry barrier.

Ants will typically avoid surfaces where these repellants are present because they do not like the odor. Which natural method you choose will depend on your own nasal tolerance. For instance, vinegar can have a strong scent that may be more suitable for outdoors, while lavender would provide a pleasant scent indoors. If one method is working out for you, you can always try another.
